It wasn’t too long ago when I was struggling to find my own business voice.  Where I sounded more like croaking frog than a beautiful song bird and my business reflected it.  I had many fits and starts that included great wins, followed by several back slides and struggles.  Those early days in business felt more like I was taking one step forward and two steps back.

I spent months trying to make sense of it all, doing my best to crack the code to business success.  I had been such a strong employee.  Climbing the corporate ladder with such ease, that it never occurred to me that starting my own business would be a struggle.  I was extremely arrogant and in my own journey faced many lessons that have allowed me to grow and blossom. Through this journey, I have become a strong and influential woman.  And so you may be wondering, what my journey has been like, how you can learn from it and what finally got me to 6-Figures and beyond. Part 1: I want to be a consultant

Growing up, I didn’t realize that becoming an entrepreneur was a career path.  My parents always told me that they had moved the family to the United States (from El Salvador) in order f or us to have a better life. Ultimately they wanted my brothers, sister and I to go to school, get a degree and get good paying jobs.

 My mom especially emphasized that for her daughters, being in the United States afforded us so many more career opportunities, but never once was business ownership one of those possibilities. So I went through life, much like everyone else. I was unaware that there was such a thing as small business ownership. And so, I went to school at UC Davis, got a degree in Psychology and went to work in the field of Human Resources.

When I began working in high tech I noticed some “employees” that didn’t keep normal employee hours.  They seemed to just come and go as they pleased and they talked about other “gigs” they had. Curious to all heck, I asked around and found out these people were called consultants. That they owned their own businesses and above all, I learned that they were paid dearly for their “expertise”. I also learned that they got to take off as much time as they chose, which for me sounded like HEAVEN. When I found this out, I understood that my ultimate goal was to be one of them.  To have control over my salary, the work I did and above all, my schedule.  It was then that I began to do what it took to gain the greatest amount of experience in the shortest amount of time. And so my journey outside the cubicle began.

 Part 2: Alone in Singapore

At the end of 2004 I was asked to go to Singapore to help launch the Asia Pacific head
quarters of the company I was working for at that time.  I had always been huge on traveling and considering my goal to become a consultant, I thought this kind of international experience would be essential for me. So on December 31, 2004, I was on a plane bound for Singapore.

When I got there, I was excited and invigorated by the prospect of entrenching myself in another culture. It was amazing to be there, with all its hustle and bustle, great food and delightful people.  But being there alone meant there was plenty of time to think. And the more I thought, the more I began exploring my own passions and desires.  It was during this time, that I did a great deal of soul searching.  In many ways it was an awakening process unlike no other. I began exploring what I TRULY wanted out of life, instead of what others told me I SHOULD want.  The more I explored, the more I realized I was covered in other peoples “stuff”. Their beliefs, fears, and rules about how life should be, began to feel like they were a coat of tar covering my soul. 

While I was there, I made the decision I would no longer live other people’s dreams. It was time to figure out who I was, what I wanted, and get myself moving in that direction.  And so when I got back to the states, I began taking various classes. I also switched jobs to help me glean the last bit of experience I thought I needed to break free from the cubicle.

Part 3: The Straw the Broke the Camel’s Back

At the end of 2007, I was brought into conversations to layoff a group at our facility in San Francisco.  And although I understand that layoffs are part of business, I was having particular trouble with this one on two accounts.  First, I was bothered by it because these people had been part of an acquisition no more than two years prior and loved the work they did.  Secondly, the layoff was scheduled to happen a week after they were to be moved in to a brand new office space and for me that felt like a shitty thing to do.

It was during this time, that I decided it was time to leave.  I could no longer pretend that I enjoyed my job or that it was in alignment with my values and ultimate dreams. I also knew that if I left, then perhaps someone else could keep their job, and if there was such a thing as luck, that the person that got to keep their job was someone who actually wanted it.

When I began my business I first focused on Organizational Development and Executive Coaching, because I thought that was all I was qualified to do (and frankly I didn’t know any better).  When I began the business I was able to grow it quickly, because I had a great reputation and I was confident in my skills.  The funny thing was that when I would go into these businesses, I was getting pulled aside by women asking me three very poignant questions: 

  1. Are you making money?
  2. Are you happy?
  3. Can you teach me about starting a business?

Most of my time spent consulting was spent talking to women about their business ideas, their “what if” scenarios and about what their life could be like if they called the shots.  Pretty soon, I realized there might just be a business in all this dreaming. And so I began to focus on helping women create and grow their businesses. I wish I could say, that I became an overnight success, but this is where the story gets really interesting…
