Reclaiming my power, the tale of the dress

Silvia in an Adrianna Papel dress from Fall 2009

I’ve noticed a lot of people want to know about the outfits that I wore when I did my photo shoot with HeartShot photographer Christina Morrassi in particular, they are curious about the black dress (designed by Adrianna Papel).  I have shared this story with only a handful of people, but since there is curiosity and yes, a lesson embedded I thought I would share with you today.

You see, back in Oct of 2009 when my father passed away, I made a decision about his funeral … I might be 18 pounds heavier from all the stress of 3 major life changes that came about in a short amount of time … that I might be sadder then I had ever been in my life with the pain of my father’s passing … but I would not look like s*!t at his funeral.  I figured I might feel like s*!t but I refused to look the part.  And so I called up my personal shopper at Nordstrom let her know what was happening and had her pull some outfits for me.

This dress was one of those outfits. When I put it on I loved it and despite the waves of sorrow, putting this dress on perked me up, made me feel good even though the circumstances were bad.  And so I bought it and it brought me just a little bit of happiness in an otherwise dark time.

Fast forward to almost 1 year later, I was off to Paris, on a business trip.  On this trip, I met with my mentor, Tara Marino of Elegant Femme and two other phenomenal business women.  At this event – Crème de la Femme – we discussed business, enjoying and living life on purpose. I knew this was the event where I would redefine my relationship to the dress and more importantly how I saw myself as it related to the loss of my father.

You see, we had been very close and losing him and not having him here to see my success, was killing me.  I kept feeling like I couldn’t play big because I didn’t have him here that somehow moving forward with my life was wrong.  And so as a symbolic reclaiming of my power, I wore the dress at our private dinner. That night was a truly special night as I also sang Wishing You Were Somehow Hear Again from Phantom of the Opera, as another symbolic reclaiming of my power. (If you know the lyrics to the song, you know how poignant and fitting they were given the circumstances).

Six months later I took the dress with me to Santa Monica and to my photo shoot with Christina Morrassi. Being photographed in it became my way to tie the bow around the life changing experience of losing my father, reclaiming my power and moving forward with my life and business. Not long after that photo shoot I had my biggest business month and I know it was because I stepped into my power and refused to have my father’s passing define me.

And so I ask you, is there an area of your life or your business where you have lost your power? If so, how can you symbolically reclaim your power and allow yourself and business to thrive?

I spent all day on a photo shoot with the most amazing photographer, Christina Morassi. It was the most fun I’ve had in years!(check out just 1 of 1000 pictures taken, below). As I mentioned in the last post, Brand is something that we sometimes over complicate. I find that if we really allow ourselves to shine in the way that makes us happiest, and sprinkle in a little business savvy, the business does in fact THRIVE. For me, doing a photo shoot that really reflected who I am and where I want my brand to go, was really important. It was a rewarding and an amazing growth opportunity. It took a lot of courage for me to put myself out there in this way. To take ownership of who I am and the accompanying brand. But I have to say, it was worth every ounce of anxiety and doubt. So I encourage you, to step outside your cubicle, and step into something that is authentically you!

As for the business, I look forward to sharing more, in the near future. In fact, be on the lookout in May for some great announcements and new products and opportunities to work with me!

All the Best,

The message from the massage

While getting my massage, I was thinking about how I might be able to help more women turn their businesses around. Remember back in November when I promised I would give you more amazing content with higher value and lower cost??  Well, I had a major download right there while in the midst of a massage…

Because I am tired at watching women struggle in silence, I am launching something very special. For a select group of lucky ladies, who are frustrated and overwhelmed in their business I am holding a 12 week intensive program (think Biggest Loser for Business Building!), that was previously by invitation only, called the Business Turnaround Challenge.

In this amazing program, you will have the opportunity to make 2011 your turnaround year. It will be the year that has you climbing out of debt and into the space of abundance. Take you from feeling overwhelmed and scattered to in charge and focused.  In this powerful 12 week hybrid program, you will get to lay the foundation to double your income AND increase your time and freedom to do more of the things you love!

Now I’m sure you’ve already tried marketing seminars, sales how to’s and don’t want to buy one more product or training, but this program is different. This program was designed with the female entrepreneur in mind. It contains my very own proprietary formula that has changed the lives of countless women, helping them to no longer struggle in their businesses. Not only that, but I will hold your hand step by step, so that your business not only starts making sense to you, but starts to work for you instead of against you.

Imagine what it would be like, if on December 31, 2011 you could say “2011 was the best year in my business and my life!” … what would that be worth to you?

You might be thinking, “Enough Silvia, I’m in, sign me up”. But because I want to make this program stellar and ensure that you get the most out of your investment, this program is by application only.  So if you feel that this program might be right for you, and you want to learn more, I encourage you to complete the following application form: http://outsidethecubicle.com/coaching/busapp/ before February 1 @ 5pm pacific, for consideration (Note: Applying for the program in no way obligates you to buy).

Aloha again!

Aloha-

As you read this I’ll be on a flight back from Hawaii.  Yes, I know I was just in Kauai in November, but this time I was on Maui doing business.  I know, how in the world did I end up doing business on Maui?  Well it all began with a little thought, “What would happen if women were able to be in a space of joy and relaxation and from that way of being think about their businesses?”  You see, the times I’ve made the biggest strides and had the biggest growth in my business have been when I have felt relaxed and joyful.  And wouldn’t you know it, it really works! I’ve had so much success in my business by creating from a space that is truly “Outside the Cubicle”, that I have been able to grow deeply as a women AND grow my business in a way that suites me.  Ah, the beauty of being a woman.

SO what was I doing on Maui?  Well after a vacation with my husband, I hosted 4 women to be part of my VIP Retreat and Mastermind Program.  One of these amazing women had a 1 day VIP day with me and the other 3 had a special 2 day retreat as an intimate group.  The amount of energy, breakthroughs, and work that was done in what would otherwise feel like a short span of time was nothing short of a miracle and the thing is, I can’t wait to do it again!  It has actually inspired me to have more retreats and supporting masterminds, because I can see the potential for this to be a game changer for all of you amazing women who want to play bigger and do things your way.  I could go on and on about how inspired, honored and excited I am, but I’m going to stop here, mostly because I’m going to go soak up a few more rays of sun and enjoy my last moments in Hawaii, but before I do, I’m curious what passion or part of you would you like to further incorporate into your business? Share it with a reply to this message or post a comment on my blog, I really want to know!

Talk soon,

Silvia

P.S. Together let’s thrive!

Why did I want my own business?

In order to create a successful 6-figure business you must first define “You” and “Who”. “You” refers to those components that are essential to you in your business – your mission, vision, values and brand. “Who” refers to the people you serve. When you define both, you can easily structure a business that meets your needs and the needs of your clients.

Although the mission is a component to creating a successful 6-figure business, it is also an essential part in helping you maintain motivation for your business. By defining your mission you create a guiding light for yourself in your business and your life. I have found that when the women I work with really connect to their mission, there is no stopping them.

Defining your mission doesn’t need to be overwhelming or scary. In my opinion it should be a fun and creative process where you go for a walk, meditate, journal or do whatever works for you to activate your creativity and flow. Once you are in that open heart and mind space, ask yourself:

1. “Why is this business so important to me?” – remember answer freely and without censoring

Then ask:

2. “What does having [whatever you just said or wrote] allow me to have or be or do that is even more important?”

And then keep repeating question 2 until you feel like you can’t go any further! When you get to that point you will be surprised at how important your business is to you and the “Why”, your mission, will astound you!

Try it out and send me an email or leave me a comment with your mission, so that I can hold the space for you to achieve it!

Getting Excited For 2011

I suggest you set a little time aside to go for a walk, journal, or curl up in your favorite thinking spot to answer these questions. Allow yourself to explore to your heart’s content. When you start feeling that excitement you know you are dialed in to your head, heart and gut!

Getting Excited for 2011 Questions:

  1. 1.   What 1 thing do you most want to accomplish in 2011?
  2. 2.   What 1 thing do you want to let go of in 2011?
  3. Who do you want to be by the end of 2011?
  4. How do you want to be living by the end of 2011?
  5. Who would you most like to reconnect with in 2011?

Really allow yourself to answer these questions honestly with no judgment and only love and compassion.  Once you are done exploring those questions do the following exercise to turbo charge and allow for the real excitement to set in.

Getting Excited for 2011 Turbo Charge:

Now imagine yourself this time next year, having accomplished all you wrote. Notice what you look and sound like.  Step into her, the you of 1 year from now, and notice how you feel, how you move and how you think.  Linger there for as long as you’d like.  Journal about what it’s like to be in this space.  Even take a moment to write yourself a few bits of advice from this place of wisdom and growth. Give this space a symbol, color or a name. And when you are ready take a step back into your current self, bringing that symbol, color or name back with you. Consider what you just experienced.  Reread what you wrote and notice the excitement that ensues.

You are well on your way to accomplishing many amazing things in 2011!

Mourning My BlackBerry

I know it is sad, when a grown woman stares at her lifeless BlackBerry hoping that it will come back to life.  Pushing the power button in rhythm as if she was performing CPR to see if it could be revived, but alas my BlackBerry is dead.  Don’t know what happened, it just heated up and then poof … it was gone.

So today I went to the Verizon Store to find out what, if anything they could do and it turns out there were a “lot of phones that behaved this way”.  And apparently it happened a lot in the South Bay, because only SF has replacement phones. So now I wait, because my phone is being shipped to me and it may take a “few days”.

At first I thought it would be difficult to deal with not being connected 24/7, to not be able to check emails incessantly or text as a way to pass the time, but…what I have found is that I have time for other things, like writing a blog post or have a leisurely lunch with my husband.

You see this is what I love about my life and what I do.  Even when something seemingly inconvenient happens (that by the way would have felt impossible to solve during my 9 to 5 days) I now have the absolute flexibility to go with the flow and take it all in stride. For these few BlackBerryless days, I will enjoy my freedom and perhaps even lose that phantom limb syndrome that tingles at the palm of my hand. I’ll let you know if I find freedom beyond the BlackBerry, though I fear I am a lost cause :-)

Happy Thanksgiving & a Quick Rant!

Waimea Canyon on Kaua'i

Hello My Friends,

I was on vacation, basking in the sun, on Kauai last week and I got to reflecting on my journey from the cubicle to entrepreneur and realized I have a lot to be thankful for.  I’ve had great support from my family, especially my husband Scott.  I have a background that has made my transition easier, especially since I spent my last years in the corporate world working at Intuit in the Small Business Division.  I have extensive training in Neuro Linguistics Programming (NLP) where I learned how to uncover the “difference that makes a difference” and I applied that concept to uncover what I had to do to create a thriving business.

Through the mixture of support and background, I’ve been able to make leaps and bounds in my business.  To hit the ground running bringing in six figures the first year I was in business. And to recover from the blow of letting some of my business go last year as my dad fell very ill and passed away.

It has allowed me to rebuild my business to be even stronger this year and to go from making $2000 per month in January of 2010 to $30,000+ per month AND take 6 vacations in less than a year! I’ve used what I learned to create a business building model that has in turn helped my clients gain exponential growth in their businesses; some of them growing 50% to over 200% and more.  Because of the staggering results I am seeing, and realized that I have truly uncovered what REALLY works in building a thriving business I am motivated now more than ever to share this business building model with as many women entrepreneurs as possible in 2011!

You see, I am tired of watching you struggle and be in survival mode.  I am sick and tired of witnessing the fallacy that is out there – that somehow if you learn one more marketing strategy or one more sales conversion technique that it will change your business.  The truth is there are a myriad of ways to bring you a long line of customers and convert them… there is no magic pill and this madness has got to stop. What I want to share with you is my formula for what it truly takes to build a business that THRIVES in any economy and to then use the marketing and sales strategies you are most comfortable with to pull yourself out of survival mode.  After you’ve got the foundational pieces in place, you are ready to learn other tools that will help you turbo charge your business, allowing you to grow it at the pace you most desire.

So I am making a commitment to you.  I will be brining you more free content and more group programs at affordable rates in 2011.  I will also be learning more about the latest marketing and sales strategies, uncovering the “difference that makes the difference” and offering that information to you too!  Your business is to help your clients not to pour over countless books, trainings, articles, etc.  That’s what I’m here for – consider me your cheat sheet for business building!

And because I’m impatient and can’t wait until 2011 to start giving you new content, I will be releasing a series of videos in December where I will share with you my very own Thriving Business Success Formula.  It is the formula I’ve used and continue to use in my business AND that I have taught countless women (and men) to help them achieve their very own Thriving Business. It is time that we stood up for ourselves and what we believe in! 2011 is the year to create massive positive change in the world through our businesses and I look forward to supporting you on your business building journey!

Together Let’s Thrive,
